Project Snow Angel
INT. BEDROOM – NIGHT
A master bedroom. Framed pictures adorn the dresser and walls of the well decorated space. The pictures are of a young married couple.
SAM, unshaven, middle 20s, sits alone in the middle of his still made bed in just enough light to outline that he has a phone in his lap.
He brings the handset up to his face and dials a number.
The phone RINGS on the other end a few times before WENDY picks it up.
WENDY
(Through phone)
Plattsmouth police dispatch.
SAM
Hey Wendy.
WENDY
(Sighs)
Sam, I’m sorry, but she’s not here. (pause) You have to stop calling, Ok?
SAM
Stop Calling? This is a city line. I pay taxes.
INT. BEDROOM - DAYBREAK
Their conversation continues as a voiceover to the following action. The camera cuts to SAM getting dressed and preparing for his day.
WENDY
What do you want SAM?
SAM
(Awkwardly)
Well, you know, just wanted to see...how you’re doin and stuff.
WENDY
How I’m doing?
INT. KITCHEN - MORNING
SAM looks for something to eat in the kitchen, but doesn’t find anything other than a half-empty bottle of alcohol. He grabs the bottle. The phone conversation continues.
SAM
Yeah. Like how your day is going.
WENDY
…Sam, this is an official police line. If you don’t have anything to report, don’t call.
INT. LIVING ROOM - MORNING
Wendy hangs up the phone. SAM sits on the couch as the TV BLARES. He opens the bottle and takes a drink of his breakfast.
SAM
(to the bottle)
I’ll see you later, buddy.
SAM screws the lid back on the bottle and puts it on the living room table. He stands up and walks out of the house.
EXT. STREET – MORNING
SAM exits his house with an empty box in hand and walks over to his winter dressed car, his gaze aimed squarely at the ground in front of him. He sets the box in the back seat and enters the vehicle.
INT. CAR – MORNING
SAM starts the car. He stares out the front of the car for a few seconds before backing the car out of the driveway.
The scenery behind SAM changes a few times as he drives to his destination.
EXT. OFFICE BUILDING – MORNING
A mixture of steam and smoke plume from two of SAM’s co-workers, JERROD and MATT, as they take hits from a glass pipe in the cold of the winter morning on the side of the building. SAM’s car rolls into a nearby parking spot. He exits the vehicle with the empty box and approaches his co-workers.
JERROD
Holy Shit! Sam! What’s goin on man?
MATT
(coughing)
Fuckin, Sam – shit.
SAM
What’s goin on guys?
JERROD
Nothin. At all.
MATT
(coughs, reaches out with pipe)
Yeah. You want any of this?
SAM
No- You two smoke weed before work?
MATT
Who wouldn’t? I would literally shoot my dick off from boredom working at this shithole otherwise.
SAM
Well. That is…something.
JERROD
So, what the fuck have you been up to? Did you know you were fired?
SAM
(holds up the box)
Yep, that’s why I’m here. But yeah, I’ve been pretty busy.
MATT lights up the pipe and begins taking a long hit.
JERROD
Oh yeah?
SAM
I’ve been trying to set up a restaurant-
MATT begins coughing violently and uncontrollably.
JERROD
Really?
SAM
(looking at MATT)
Uh, Yeah.
MATT continues coughing and collapses as he reaches into his pocket and brings out a rescue inhaler.
JERROD
Well tell me about it, what’s it called?
JERROD grabs the pipe from MATT’s hand and continues his conversation with SAM as MATT starts taking hits from his inhaler.
SAM
I don’t have a name for it yet, but the whole idea behind the restaurant is that you write you order down and send it through one of those bank suction tubes and then we send your food back in a bank suction tube.
JERROD brings the pipe up to his mouth and begins taking a long hit.
JERROD
(trying to hold smoke in lungs)
That’s awesome.
SAM
It’s not really all that interesting.
JERROD
(exhales)
What! Yeah it is. What kind of food would you serve?
SAM
You know, mostly simple stuff. Like soups and salads. Most other food would get jumbled up because of the nature of bank suction tubes.
MATT
You should come up with a soup that taste like a dessert. Like maybe cake. Or ice cream. Or both.
JERROD
Who would want to eat a warm bowl of melted ice cream? That’s disgusting.
MATT
It’s not a warm bowl of melted ice cream. It’s ice cream soup. It would be hot, not warm. (thoughtful pause) Unless you ate it slow, then it would be colder at the end.
SAM
(dumbfounded)
You know what, I will look into that for you.
The three stand in an awkward silence for a few seconds.
SAM
Well, I’m gonna go get my stuff-
JERROD
Oh, yeah. Well-
SAM
…I’ll see you guys later.
JERROD
See ya.
MATT
Later buddy.
SAM starts to walk away. After a few steps, JERROD shouts back to him.
JERROD
Hey Sam,
SAM stops and turns back around.
JERROD
(CONT)
I heard about Melanie. Sorry man.
SAM
Oh. It’s fine. Thanks though.
JERROD
Alright. See ya later.
SAM
Yeah. See ya.
JERROD and MATT continue smoking. SAM makes his way into the office building.
INT. OFFICE BUILDING – DAY
SAM walks quickly over to his desk. He sets the box down on the desk and begins filling it with his personal items. He comes across a picture of MELANIE in her police uniform. Angry tears begin forming as he stares at the picture for a few seconds. He slams the picture into the box and leaves it all on the desk before storming out of the office.
EXT. PAMIDA – DAY
Pamida. Uninteresting and unremarkable in every way. Customers trickle in and out of the front door at a relaxed pace.
SAM’s car enters the lot. He finds his way into a parking spot and exits the car.
INT. PAMIDA – DAY
A clock sits on the wall. The time shows 11:37 am.
DEREK, the manager of Pamida, stands in front of SAM in the middle of the main walkway, clipboard in hand.
DEREK
How you been Sam?
SAM
(annoyed)
Fantastic. Yourself?
DEREK
Why aren’t you at work Sam?
SAM
Why the fuck do you care, Derek?
DEREK
Come on. Don’t be like that. Why aren’t you at work?
SAM
I was fired, alright. Thanks.
DEREK
Sorry to hear that. I could get you a job here if-
SAM
No. No thank you. I’m not another middle-schooler for you to try and molest.
DEREK
(sighs)
You know, we all kinda missed you at Melanie’s funeral.
SAM
Well I’ve never missed you at any point in time for any reason.
DEREK
(sighs)
It’s pretty obvious you don’t like me. So why do you keep coming here?
SAM
I enjoy Pamida’s selection of Bugle Boy Shorts. So, if you’ll excuse me…
SAM walks away from DEREK towards the middle of the store.
DEREK
(yelling as SAM walks away)
Call me if you need a job Sam!
SAM stands at a game console demo kiosk. His focus completely invested in the game in front of him. After a frustrating loss, he drops the controller.
A hauntingly familiar figure in a police uniform enters his peripheral line of sight begins looking through CDs. Sam shifts his focus to her and the vision of MELANIE fades. VERONICA’s physical resemblance to MELANIE is reflected by SAM’s face. Her long hair rests gently on the shoulders of her business dress suit and SAM watches her wrists as her fingers gracefully spider through the CD rack resulting in a barely audible CLACKING.
VERONICA notices SAM staring. SAM fumbles with the controller for a second before quickly shuffling away to hide in a nearby aisle.
SAM proceeds to follow VERONICA around the store from a distance. He maneuvers his way in line behind her at the check stand.
He watches her every move as she pays for her purchase. Just as he gathers what courage he has and attempts to initiate some sort of conversation with her, the CASHIER starts talking.
CASHIER
Sir?
VERONICA walks out of the store, SAM watches until she is out of site.
CASHIER
(CONT)
Excuse me, sir?
SAM
(inattentive)
Yeah.
CASHIER
How did you want to pay for this?
SAM
I’m not going to.
CASHIER
What!?
SAM
I want none of these things. Is it all right if you just put it all back?
CASHIER
I guess-
SAM
Great. Thanks.
SAM rushes out the door before the CASHIER finishes her sentence.
CASHIER
(annoyed, to herself)
I don’t really- Fucking asshole!
EXT. PAMIDA – DAY
SAM runs out of the store just in time to see VERONICA get in her car. She drives out of the parking lot.
SAM sprints to see where she’s headed. She pulls into a nearby bank. SAM begins jogging towards the bank.
EXT. BANK – DAY
SAM stops jogging a few strides away from the bank door. After a brief stop at the door to check his appearance and dust himself off, he enters the bank.
INT. BANK LOBBY – DAY
SAM walks into the lobby of the bank and looks around. The lobby is like that of any other; extraordinarily clean with a noticeable odor of paper products filling the room.
The lobby is empty for a moment. VERONICA walks in from a backroom and takes a place at one of the teller stands.
VERONICA
Sorry to keep you waiting there. Anything I can do for you today?
SAM checks to see if there is anyone else in the bank. He approaches the counter.
SAM
(Awkwardly)
Um. Yes. I would like to make a deposit.
VERONICA
Ok. Can I get your name?
SAM
(looking at her nameplate)
Veronica.
VERONICA
What?
SAM
Oh. No. Veronica is your name. Wow, sorry. I am called Sam…by the people who know me.
VERONICA
(laughs)
Ok. Sam, what is your last name?
SAM
Patterson.
VERONICA
I can’t seem to find your account…
SAM
I don’t actually have an account yet.
VERONICA
Ok. Did you want to set one up?
SAM
Yes. That is something that I want to do.
VERONICA
All right. I’ll just need to see your ID and get the minimum deposit.
SAM checks his coat and his pockets for the required items.
SAM
Right. I don’t have any of that. Will you be here tomorrow?
VERONICA
Yeah.
SAM
Awesome. Do you have a card or something?
VERONICA
Um…yeah. Just a second.
VERONICA searches behind her teller stand for a business card.
VERONICA
(CONT)
Here you go.
SAM
OK. So I need ID and a minimum deposit.
VERONICA
Yep.
SAM
Alright. I guess I will see you tomorrow.
VERONICA
See you then.
SAM reluctantly backs up towards the door, looking at the business card the whole time.
EXT. BANK – DAY
SAM exits the bank. He curses at the ground, regretting every decision he made in the past five minutes. He turns around and reenters the bank.
INT. BANK LOBBY – DAY
SAM enters the lobby. VERONICA looks down at the counter as she does busy work to pass the time. SAM approaches in a painfully awkward manor.
VERONICA
(cheerfully)
Be with you in just a second.
SAM
It’s actually me…again.
VERONICA
Hey. Something else I can do for you today?
SAM
(slowly, awkwardly)
Yeah. I just wanted to ask you...when do you open tomorrow?
VERONICA
Eight AM.
SAM
Ok. Thank you.
EXT. BANK – DAY
SAM re-exits the bank and once again beats himself up over his lack of courage.
EXT. PAMIDA – DAY
Pamida. Mediocrity in brick and mortar form fills the screen once again.
INT. PAMIDA – DAY
The clock on the wall shows 3:22PM.
SAM slowly creeps down the greeting card aisle looking at pretty much every card along the way.
DEREK rushes by the aisle, notices SAM and comes back to talk to him.
DEREK
What are you doing back here Sam?
SAM continues looking through the cards, paying little attention to DEREK.
SAM
I’m looking for a card that says “I don’t know your last name, but I think we are meant to have babies together at some point in the distant future.” Do you have any of those?
DEREK
(slowly, concerned)
What is this about?
SAM
The girl at the bank nearby. I think I love her.
DEREK
Veronica?
SAM stops in the aisle and turns to face DEREK.
SAM
You know her?
DEREK
Yeah, Veronica Camaron. She’s the pharmacist’s daughter. She’s 19 Sam.
SAM
So? I’m not too much older than that.
DEREK
Um, OK. So did you finally visit Melanie?
SAM
No, Derek. It’s kinda hard to visit her. She’s dead.
DEREK
I know that, but before you start chasing after someone else, I really think you should visit her.
SAM
I really think you need to fuck off.
DEREK
Fine. Fuck me right? I get that. Now stop pissing your life away, grow up and visit your wife.
SAM
(angry)
Pissing my life-? Melanie pissed both our lives away six months ago. With a gun.
DEREK
Come on man. That’s not fair.
SAM
(tearing up)
No. You know what’s not fair. I said “I’ll love you forever.” She said “I’ll love you until I decide to shoot myself in the head.” So fuck you, fuck her and fuck your shitty store.
SAM starts walking out of the aisle angrily and hastily.
DEREK
(Shouting)
Sam! (To himself) Shit.
INT. BEDROOM – NIGHT
SAM sits on his bed, a phonebook open in front of him. He puts VERONICA’s business card down on the open phonebook.
SAM stares at VERONICA’s number in the phonebook. A dream sequence initiates.
INT. BEDROOM – NIGHT DREAM SEQUENCE
SAM picks up the handset and dials VERONICA’s number with astonishing speed.
The phone RINGS once before it is picked up on the other end.
SAM
(Excited)
Hello VERONICA?
INT. VERONICA’S BEDROOM – NIGHT
VERONICA sits on her bed, her back arched and her bank dress suit unbuttoned.
VERONICA
(exasperated)
Sam?
SAM
I’m here.
VERONICA
Oh, Sam! I need you to come over so you can do me!
INT. BEDROOM – NIGHT
MELANIE appears near SAM. Her hair matter to her face with blood
MELANIE
Yeah Sam. Go over and do her.
END DREAM SEQUENCE
INT. BEDROOM – NIGHT
SAM stares at the phonebook for a few moments before closing it quickly and pushing off his bed violently.
SAM picks up his handset and begins to dial a phone sex hotline.
The phone RINGS on the other end a few times before the automated SEXLINE ROBOT picks it up.
SEXBOT
(disgustingly erotic)
Thanks for calling the Sexjob Cumline! For English, press one.
SAM pushes the 1 key. A TONE is audible. After a few seconds of clicking, the line is transferred to KRYSTAL.
KRYSTAL
(erotic)
This is Krystal, what can I do for you honey?
SAM
Yes, do you have any girls there named Veronica?
INT. LIVING ROOM – MORNING
SAM sits on the couch as the TV BLARES in the background. He is completely wrapped up in the same liquid breakfast as he had the day before.
When the bottle is empty, SAM grabs it by the neck and throws it into the wall.
SAM picks a boxcutter up off of the table and walks hastily across the room toward the door.
SAM exits the house and slams the door.
INT. CAR – DAY
SAM enters the car and starts the engine. He backs up out of the driveway. The scenery behind him changes a few times as he drives to his destination.
EXT. BANK – DAY
SAM parks his car, hurries to the door of the bank and enters.
INT. BANK LOBBY – DAY
SAM walks quickly into the lobby. VERONICA stands behind the teller counter doing busy work. She looks up and notices SAM.
VERONICA
Oh hey! Ready to set up an account?
SAM
Uhh. Not just yet.
VERONICA
(confused)
Ok. Is there anything else I can do for you then?
SAM
Veronica-
SAM brings out a box cutter and sets it on the counter.
VERONICA
What’s that?
SAM
Veronica, I need to tell you something.
VERONICA
OK.
SAM
(sighs)
I need to rob the bank.
VERONICA
…That’s…not funny.
SAM
It’s not a joke.
SAM extends the blade out of the box cutter.
SAM
(CONT)
See.
VERONICA
I see a box cutter.
SAM
Yes. I am robbing you with it.
VERONICA
No.
SAM
What? You can’t say no. I’m not asking.
VERONICA
Stan, I don’t-
SAM
My name’s Sam.
VERONICA
Fine. I don’t know what your deal is, but you’re not robbing this bank. Not on a Saturday. Not with a box cutter.
SAM
Whatever. Is there anyone else here, like a manager or something?
VERONICA
My manager’s on maternity leave. I’m the only one here.
SAM
Isn’t that illegal?
VERONICA
No. Robbing a bank is illegal.
SAM
I know this.
VERONICA
OK.
SAM
…So are you going to call the police or…
VERONICA
NO! You not going to rob the bank. I’m pretty sure you can’t even kill anyone with a box cutter-
SAM
Fuck, maybe not. But I can hurt you with it. If you don’t want to call the police, fine. I’ll do it. But I’m really robbing the bank. So start loading the fucking money or I will hurt you, on a Saturday, with a boxcutter.
SAM steps away from the counter and takes a cell phone out of his pocket. He dials the Plattsmouth Police Dispatch number. OFFICER MARKEY picks up almost immediately.
OFFICER MARKEY
Plattsmouth police dispatch.
SAM
Yes, I would like to report a crime.
OFFICER MARKEY
(sighs)
Sam?
SAM
Yes?
OFFICER MARKEY
What do you want?
SAM
I am seriously trying to report a crime, Markey. Everybody there said “Don’t call unless you have something to report.” I’m fucking trying to report something.
OFFICER MARKEY
Calm down Sam. What’s the problem?
SAM
The bank right off the highway by the Pamida is being robbed.
OFFICER MARKEY
OK. And you’re sure of this?
SAM
Yes.
OFFICER MARKEY
OK. And how did you find this out?
SAM
I’m the one doing the robbing.
OFFICER MARKEY
…Sam, this is absolutely not funny. Jesus Christ! Do you know how much trouble you would be in if I actually send anybody to the bank?
SAM
I’m not kidding Markey.
OFFICER MARKEY
OK. So you wanna play games?
SAM
Yeah, I have a game for you. It called I’m seriously robbing the bank and I have a hostage.
OFFICER MARKEY
(sarcastic)
I suppose you have a list of demands too.
SAM
(sarcastic)
Yeah, I’m going to need a solid gold helicopter and a bus full of midget assassins. No I don’t have a list.
VERONICA
Oh my god.
SAM looks back at VERONICA. She sits down behind the counter rests her head on her hands.
OFFICER MARKEY
Why would you call the police if you don’t have a list of demands?
SAM
I don’t fucking know. I thought that’s what you were supposed to do.
OFFICER MARKEY
According to what?
SAM
Movies, Markey. Ever seen one?
OFFICER MARKEY
Yes but-
SAM
Whatever. I gotta go.
OFFICER MARKEY hangs up on his end. SAM closes his cell phone.
VERONICA
Are you going to leave now? We closed like…five minutes ago.
SAM walks back over to the teller counter and re-engages VERONICA.
SAM
Veronica, can I ask you something?
VERONICA
Sure.
SAM
(takes a breath)
Would you want to go out to dinner with me sometime?
VERONICA
Are you going to stop robbing the bank?
SAM
Is that a condition for my question or is that a separate question?
VERONICA
It’s a separate question.
SAM
Ok. So what about my question?
VERONICA
Your question?
SAM
Yes.
VERONICA
No. I will not be going with you. Anywhere. I don’t even know anything about you.
SAM
Well, what about the money. Are you going to start putting that in a bag or a suitcase or a fucking sock or something?
VERONICA
No.
SAM
Why not?
VERONICA
I really don’t think you want to do this.
SAM
No, I really wanna do this.
VERONICA
I’m still not giving you the money.
SAM
Shit.
SAM takes a few steps away from the teller counter to compose himself. He quickly returns to the counter and grabs VERONICA’s hand.
SAM
(angry)
Veronica-
VERONICA
(scared)
Let me go Sam.
SAM
(angry, starting to tear up)
You are really starting to piss me off. Now, I don’t know how I can be any more clear on this subject, but this is not a joke. I want the fucking money. Ok?
VERONICA
(sobbing)
Ok.
SAM lifts up the boxcutter and extends the blade.
SAM
(screaming)
Give me the fucking money!
OFFICER MARKEY
Sam.
OFFICER MARKEY has entered the bank and now stands behind SAM, Gun drawn.
SAM turns to face MARKEY
MARKEY
(CONT)
I need you to put the knife down.
SAM
(crying, sniffling)
It’s not a knife. It’s a boxcutter.
MARKEY
That’s fine. I still need you to put it down.
SAM
Did you all come to arrest me now?
MARKEY
No. I didn’t call this in. It’s just you and me. Why are you doing this Sam?
SAM
I just fucking hate her Markey.
MARKEY
Who Veronica here?
SAM
No, you idiot.
MARKEY
Oh. Hey, Melanie didn’t do what she did because of you. She was having a tough time on the job and I don’t really know why she did it, but it wasn’t because of you.
SAM
Fuck. Why’d she leave me here alone, Markey?
MARKEY
I’m sorry. I don’t know. But she a good person, an excellent police officer and she loved you. So put the knife-
SAM
Boxcutter.
MARKEY
Fine. Put the boxcutter down and we can all just go home.
SAM
Ok.
SAM sets the boxcutter down on the counter. MARKEY lowers his gun. SAM approaches MARKEY and is received with a manly embrace.
They Both Exit the Bank.
EXT. CEMETARY – DAY
SAM approaches MELANIE’s grave. He sets a single flower near the headstone, stands teary-eyed at the grave for a few moments and leaves.
